CFD-simulation of biofuel plant

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) or Fluid Mechanics includes analyzes within flow simulation of fluid and gases as well as thermal calculations. Primarily, we use ANSYS CFX for CFD calculation. We perform simulations for determining air resistance, laminar and turbulent flow profiles, flow rates, pressure losses and force reactions, which can then be used as boundary conditions for mechanical Finite Element calculations. CFD is also used for mixing and separation processes and for therma heat transfer. Flow simulation and thermal simulation can be combined e.g. by optimizing heat exchangers etc. One of the main benefits of using CFD simulation is that you get big savings on test setup, prototypes, and laboratory tests.

The pictures illustrate a reactor that is part of a larger process plant for converting organic material into oil. The recycled process gas is distributed through the manifold to the reactor. The gas is distributed through the reactor, where the pyrolysis process takes place. The colors of the glass flow indicate the velocity of the flow, where blue color indicates low velocity, and red one illustrates high velocity. A sluice near the exit remove impurities before the gas reaches the exit.
